Pin-Mania!::2

Yesterday, I publicly announced my self-Pinterest challenge, partly to share my joys in crafting with you, but mostly just to keep myself accountable.  This way, if I start to wimp out, all five of you can say, "Keep going!  Stay strong!"  While I was on a bracelet kick, I thought this might make a nice second Pin-Mania project.  I chose black thread rather than mint and varied the stitch to make a simple single round with a picot edging.  I made six of them and stitched them together at the edges.  Since I'm insisting on using supplies I already have on hand, I didn't use the metal clasp.  I used a black button in it's place, and ta-da!  Presto, Pin-o, I have a bracelet.

Pin-Mania!

I think I've mentioned before this tiny little website called Pinterest.  Why, yes, yes I have.  As a matter of fact, I have several posts dedicated to things I have made or cooked or mildly considered doing based on photos from Pinterest.  While talking to a friend last week I heard myself declare that I spend three hours a day on Pinterest.  What?  Three hours a day?  Sometimes (not every day, I promise).  Little Man does, after all, go to bed at 7:00.  What other quiet activity am I going to find to do for three hours?  Read?  Knit?  Learn a new language?  Why?, when I can feel just as productive after hours of simply "pinning"?  Ahem.  After mulling over this for a few hours (while on Pinterest, mind you), I decided I needed to validate all of the time I am wasting dedicating over at my second home.  Earlier in the week over at Young House Love, Sherry announced her seasonal Pinterest Challenge, where she and her friends and readers are going to create and share objects they make based upon their pins.  I'm not participating in their challenge, but I thought it would be a neat idea for me to issue a challenge to myself.  Can I make five things this week off of my Crafts Board?  Why, I don't see why not.

The first project I opted to tackle was this button bracelet.  The original is from an Etsy Shop, and took the idea and put my own spin on it.  I used hemp as the bracelet base and opted for buttons of different colors rather than one shade.

Easy, peasy.  Pinned and made.  On to the next project!

Favorite Things::Raindrop Plop

Yesterday was a good day for the book Raindrop Plop by Wendy Cheyette Lewison.  It's one of my favorite children's books, and while I taught pre-K, every time it rained I made sure we read it during Circle Time.  After a slightly rocky (early) morning with Little Man, we settled into a groove and wound up having a fabulous day.

It was the first time we played out in the rain, and Little Man had a blast jumping and kicking in the puddles.  I think, though, that we need to get some appropriate rain gear for the two of us.  We were so wet and cold when we came in that I plopped him down into the "bubbles" so he could warm up.  Finish it off with a Mommy/Little Man lunch date, and you've got a great morning!

A Painting We Will Go

On Monday and Wednesday mornings, Little Man goes to a Mother's Morning Out program for three hours.  When you subtract the time I spend on the road, that gives me a little over two-and-a-half hours to run my errands, clean the house, wash the laundry, and, yesterday, paint.  Ever since I repainted the cabinets in the den I have wanted to paint the rest of the trim in the house in a white, semi-gloss paint.  With a two-year-old running around, however, that is a difficult and messy task.  I kept planning to get it done while he was at school, and it just kept not happening.  This week, though, I made double sure I didn't have anything else to do on Wednesday.  I ran all of my errands and did all of my cleaning on Monday.  I already had all of the supplies I needed and list of what to paint ready to go.  I was going to get the baseboards in the great room, hall, and Little Man's room done and the living room side of the hall door  covered in paint.  Half-way through gathering my painting gear I decided to paint the front door.  Without asking anyone first.  Then I realized that not only was I a grown-up but the owner of the house.  So I went for it.  Mr. Chadwick's response to projects is typically apathetic ("Go for it" "Whatever" "If you think it will work" etc.), so I was of the opinion that he really wouldn't care.  **Disclaimer:  Not all husbands are like this.  You should probably run painting projects by them first to make sure you don't get into trouble.  However, I'm pretty sure that my dear beloved wouldn't have noticed the different paint color until he read this if I hadn't shown him.**  Ahem.

 I started my painting by priming the front door first with the intention of painting it with the same white semi-gloss I was using everywhere else.  And then it hit me.  All of the leftover paint from the previous owners was still in the house.  I wonder what's there??  Turns out, there's a whole heap-a mess of paint leftover from the 2005 remodel (the receipts are taped to the tops of the cans).  As much as I don't like the paint in the den, I decided to use the rest of that sage green on the door.  After all, it's not that I don't like the color.  I just don't really like it in such a large space.  I made sure I started with the front door so I would be able to close and lock it when I went to get Little Man from school.  One robbery per year is my limit.  Since the original color of the front door was a really dark green, it never crossed my mind that the door could be seen from the road.  It's amazing what two really bad coats of white primer can accomplish.

Turns out this was highly visible from the road for the thirty minutes I was gone (along with the yard that needs to be mowed and the flower beds full of weeds...).  Oh, well.  The door only needed one coat of the sage paint after that, and it was so very worth it.  Behold the before and afters:

So very, very much better.  The chipped, dark paint is gone.  The only problem I have now, is that the door was painted to match the shutters on the outside of the house.  I guess now I have to get out there and paint those jokers.  They're going to be white, by the way.  So I got a front door make-over for absolutely no cost with absolutely no planning.  Amazing, huh?  I think I may even cross Get A New Front Door off of my list.

The rest of the painting I did was very straight-forward.  While I waited for the primer to dry, I painted the baseboards and put one coat of paint on the door in the great room.  We still intend to put quarter round on all of the baseboards like we did in here, but the Coach is so busy after school and on the weekends now with soccer that I feel terrible asking him to take on any projects.  But at the same time, I'm quite tired of looking at grungy baseboards.

The white great room door is the hardest to see the change in from the pictures, but I'll show you anyway.

As I said, it's not as startling a difference in a photograph as the front door, but in real life, I find it remarkable.  And to think that this door is what started it all...

Camera Fun

He just loves to take his picture.  Messy face and all.  You can probably also tell that he has an owie on his face.  He took a tumble from a chair and bruised up his face rather nicely over the weekend.  It finally seems to be healing, though.  Hopefully he'll feel more like himself in a day or two.  Until then, we can always take pictures of ourselves.

Just to switch it up

Well, after getting the wreath done I pushed aside the laziness that was preventing me from taking down the winter decor in the house.  Not a huge change, but with the snowflakes gone it seems like it.

I left some empty places in the window frame that I can fill in over the next couple of weeks as I decide what will look best there.  Now all I need to do is put a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and we'll be good to go.

Sprucing up for Spring

Well, at least the front door is.  It still looks like winter in the house.  I put up this plain grapevine wreath for the winter because I had no idea what to put on it that said "Winter" and not "Christmas."

Now that Spring is here, I decided it needed a little bit of color.  I made some bracelets last year for a craft show and had some leftover.  To make them, I took wooden craft sticks, soaked them in water, put them down into cups, and let them dry in a curve.  Using a glue gun, I took some scrap fabric and made rosettes, and once the wood was dry, I glued the flowers on to make corsages.

This morning I had the idea that the wood portion of the bracelet might stick down into the wreath and hold the flowers in place.

It worked.

My Very Best Helper

When it's time to put away the diapers, I know I can always count on my little helper.
